Treat the cause, not just the symptom.
Functional Medicine is a science-based and patient-centred approach to health care that seeks to discover how and why illness occurs.
Instead of disease as the point of focus, Functional Medicine involves thorough investigation of the inter-connecting genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors that underlie disease and dysfunction.
From this investigation, individual dietary and lifestyle recommendations are provided to optimise health outcomes.
DNA – Health – Methylation & Mental Health
The methylation cycle is such an important factor in keeping our genes and health in good shape. Methylation is just one small part of the DNA – Health profile. Methylation is a vital metabolic process that happens in every cell and every organ of the human body, taking place a million times a second. Life would simply not exist without it. Think of billions of little on/off switches inside your body that control everything from your stress response and how your body makes energy from food, to your brain chemistry and detoxification. That’s methylation.
There are many areas of your health we can look into with our DNA – Health Genetic Test.
For example, methylation and mental health is just one of them. Did you know that nearly 3 million Australians live with depression and/or anxiety? If serotonin (chemical messenger believed to act as a mood stabilizer) is not properly methylated it will become inactive which in turn may lead to depression.
More than two hundred of our body’s functions rely on methylation.
Why should we be concerned about Methylation?
Methylation is involved in the following:
- 400 + enzymatic & cellular reactions
- DNA synthesis & repair
- Cell replication & repair
- Neurotransmitter synthesis & metabolism
- Energy production/metabolism
- Hormone regulation
- Epigenetics – gene expression/regulation
- Telomere Integrity (plays a crucial role in cell health and ageing)
Do you want to understand the health of your DNA then we offer a series of DNA testing:-
- DNA Health
- DNA Diet
- DNA Sport
- DNA Mind
- DNA Oestrogen
- DNA Skin
Nutrigenomics is the junction between genetics and personalised nutrition.
It is a term that describes the interaction of genes and nutrients, and how each impacts the other. Genes are the set of instructions that the body uses to make very specific proteins to build, regulate, and maintain health.
A variation to a gene, called a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism, or SNP (pronounced “snip”), can cause an alteration to the proteins that are made, which can then affect cell function. SNPs can affect nutrient absorption, metabolism, elimination, and biological effects.
Genetic analysis allows a thorough assessment of many genes, so that SNPs in various biochemical pathways can be identified.
It’s useful to think of a biochemical pathway like one cog of an extensive and intricate clock. Blocking or hindering one cog from turning will complicate the entire mechanism.
Organic Acid Testing
The Organic Acids Test (OAT) provides a comprehensive and very valuable overview of a person’s health. It uses 76 metabolic markers to identify overgrowth of intestinal yeast and bacteria, oxidative stress, and levels of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals), vitamins, minerals, and oxalates. These markers are present in the urine as byproducts from the process of building and breaking down different molecules, and they tell us how your body is functioning. Many people with chronic illnesses or neurological disorders have abnormal metabolism, and by using an OAT, a very specific treatment plan can be developed.
This test is conducted from a urine sample and sent to the USA for analysis. Results take approximately 4 weeks to return.

Take control of your IBS
If you or someone you know suffers from IBS, being equipped with the right knowledge and tools can significantly improve your IBS symptoms, helping you step into better health. Talk to us about our most popular and comprehensive GI test which has the capacity to tell you how inflamed you are, whether your gut bugs are out of balance, if you have any unwanted bugs, how stressed or leaky your gut may be. It can identify Helicobacter Pylori, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), multiple strains of Candida, IBS vs IBD and a whole lot more!
Identifying intolerances/ sensitivities
Identifying food intolerances or sensitivities can be a complicated process. Different immune reactions can have different effects on the body – we can help you to identify what is the most likely type of reaction and what food may be the culprit. This may involve specific elimination protocols, functional testing and thorough case history taking to identify patterns and/ or potential triggers. We can then guide and support you through an effective protocol to resolve your food issues for good.
In some cases, a structured protocol may be warranted. Nutrition is a powerful tool and these protocols are well- researched, often clinically trialled and highly effective, but if done incorrectly without the guidance of a practitioner can leave you without answers and not seeing the improvement in symptoms you would like. It should also be noted that these protocols are used as a short-term treatment strategy alongside holistic treatment to address any underlying factors or imbalances. We often see people being told to start a protocol with little to no support, and then they are not able to effectively complete the process and are left with dietary restrictions, multiple food triggers, and nutrient deficiencies.
We offer ongoing support and guidance from start to finish, along with recipes and meal ideas. Some examples are:
- Auto-Immune protocol
- Food compound protocols – histamine, salicylates, oxalates, sulphites, etc
- Low FODMAP
- SIBO bi-phasic diet
- Ketogenic diets
- Elimination protocols
- Rotational diets for food sensitivities
Centro’s Gut Care Package
Suffering with unexplained bloating, gas, alternating bowel, fatigue, migraine headaches, itchy, inflamed eczema ? The list goes on.
It is never going to go away until you decide to do something about it!
We see so many people every day who have been putting up with unexplained symptoms for many months, sometimes years!
Book an initial consultation with one of our qualified Practitioners (we have Naturopaths, Clinical Nutritionists, Functional Medicine Practitioners to choose from). In your one hour consultation we will thoroughly discuss your symptoms with you and identify any underlying causes and triggers. At the end of your initial consultation, we will be able to offer some relief to you whilst we investigate further or wait for your test results.
Take advantage of our ‘Gut Care package’ for food sensitivity.
This will test 220 of the most common foods which may be causing inflammation and sensitivities. And based on your results we will devise an individualised diet for you with foods, recipes and meal plans. This is designed to take away the the stress of self-managing your meals around your sensitivities.
Once we receive your test results, we will take the time to go through these individually with you and make sure you feel comfortable with every element as well as giving you the confidence to still eat delicious food, without the inflammatory response!
Our package removes the challenge and stress of searching for appropriate meal ideas! All you have to do is follow the easy to understand meal plan with fabulous recipes including the foods you can and love to eat to help guide and support you in your health journey.
People often ask – do I have to eliminate these “sensitive” foods forever? The answer is NO! Most of our clients find they are less reactive to previously sensitive foods after about 12 weeks on our protocols.
By implementing a structured elimination diet protocol and utilising appropriate nutritional treatment you can reduce your number of elevated foods (food sensitivities) over time. With our nutritional plan you not only avoid your sensitive foods but you can enjoy a professionally constructed, balanced nutritional diet as well.
Testing for 220 foods together with a consultation to discuss the results with you and then the construction of your individual diet and meal plan costs $644. Private health fund rebates may apply.
